Sagres is a town in the municipality of Vila do Bispo in the District of Faro. This is all part of the Portuguese Algarve. It is a small municipality with a population of 2500. Its main source of income comes from tourism thanks to its beautiful beaches, and apartments and houses to rent, as well as the selection of hotels. Sagres is located next to San Vicente Cape, to the west of the Algarve. In Roman times the city was dedicated to the God Jupiter. Places of interest here include the Fortress, the Lighthouse and the Sailing School which was commissioned by the heir to the throne Don Enrique in the 15th century in the Lagos area.
These days Sagres is a small fishing village on the Algarve coast, with many apartments and houses available for rent. The beaches and watersports options are excellent here. Sagres is the antithesis of other parts of the Algarve where tourism is long established and large scale. In Sagres you will not find big hotel chains or blocks of apartments, but beaches, little houses and apartments to rent, a few restaurants, and a peaceful atmosphere for sporty types and nature lovers.
Sagres is synonyomous with nature and the countryside thanks to its location next to two unique nature spots, the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo, and the Natural Reserve of San Vicente Cape; it is also associated with sports- there are a wide range of options to choose from including trekking, golf, kitesurfing, windsurfing, and surfing. Above all, Sagres is an ideal holiday destination because despite being small, it offers a wide range of accomodation options including houses, apartments, and hotels. |
