The history of Sagres has been tied to the history of Saint Vincent Cape, the last place in the world for a long time. Beyond the cape nothing existed except the ocean and the end of the world. It is not strange that the entire area of Sagres and the Cape was picked by the Infante Don Enrique to create sailboats that would in time go out in search of new worlds.

Throughout this region different civilizations have roamed such as the phoenicians, tartessos, Celtics, cartigineans, romands, godos, arabs and christians. This was the last era that the region aquired great importance. Through the discovery of America by Columbus, Saint Vincent Cape went from being the end of the world to the place closest to the new world.

The Sagres Fortress for example is one of the most emblamatic of this time period, since Infante Don Enrique in the XV century built many sailboats for explorers to visit and discover new worlds.

Sagres is a municipality that is located in the Natural Park of Southeast Alentejo in the Vicentine Coast, and it is also important in the expansion of the Algarve. Sagres is still enclaved and maintains an intact interest in it´s beautiful landscapes and natural beauty.
